WESPA Championship (WESPAC) 2027 Qualification Criteria (QC)

The following are the criteria which will be used to select the Singapore players for the WESPA Championship 2027. Barring any amendments announced beforehand, these criteria will take effect from the start of the Qualifying Period (QP), with the Committee's decision being final in cases of dispute.

The QP starts from 01 Oct 2026, and concludes on 31 Jul 2027.

Eligibility

All selectees must be paid-up SA members from the commencement of the QP until WESPAC 2027. Any SA membership that expires within this period must be renewed before the expiry date.

All selectees must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents from the commencement of the QP until WESPAC 2027.

They must not have elected to represent another country when eligible to be selected for Singapore.

Each eligible selectee must play at least 40 rated games during the QP, or 50% of all available^[1] rated games in all local tournaments if there are fewer than 80 rated games during the QP.

Each eligible selectee must play in at least one major tournament during the QP.

A player is deemed to have played in a major tournament if the tournament's top division lasts at least 16 rounds and every player in the division the player plays in plays at the same time as designated by the tournament organizer.

Games won by reason of opponent's absence (winning byes) count towards the minimum required rated games. Losing byes do not.

Qualification Rating

The QP is divided into three sub-periods as follows:

Start of QP to 31 Dec 2026 (3 months)
01 Jan 2027 to 31 Mar 2027 (3 months)
01 Apr 2027 to 31 Jul 2027 (4 months)

For each eligible player, NOP and QR are calculated as follows:

NOP is the number of sub-periods with 12 or more eligible games (i.e. SA-rated games and other admissible games).
QR = (P1 + P2 + 2 × P3)/4, which is a weighted average of the player's peak ratings in the three sub-periods.

The maximum NOP is 3, i.e. for players who play 12 games or more in all sub-periods.

P1, P2, and P3 are the values determined for sub-periods i, ii, and iii respectively. Px (where x denotes the sub-period number) is based on games played in tournaments ending within that sub-period, unless otherwise directed by the SA Ratings Committee.

If the player played any SA-rated games during a sub-period, Px is the peak SA rating achieved at the end of an SA-rated tournament within that sub-period. For multi-phase tournaments like SSSg, each individually-rated phase is considered as a rated tournament.

If the player played no SA-rated games during a sub-period but has other admissible games, Px is calculated as follows:

Px = Px' - (60 × number of sub-periods using non-SA-rated overseas tournament so far)

where Px' is the last recorded peak rating from SA-rated games, or the player's last recorded SA rating if no such peak rating has been recorded.

If the player played no admissible games during a sub-period, Px is 0.

If the player plays a mixture of SA-rated tournaments and admissible overseas tournaments in a sub-period, games from both may count towards eligibility, but Px is calculated based only on SA-rated tournaments.

Admissible Games

All SA-rated games played during the QP are admissible.

Games from non-SA-rated tournaments may be admitted at the discretion of the SA Ratings Committee.

An overseas-based player may request that games from a non-SA-rated overseas tournament be admitted if the player resides outside Singapore during the relevant sub-period^[2] and has a history of at least 100 SA-rated games.

The player must submit advance notice of the overseas tournament to SA (email: ratingstoucanet.com), and submit the result within one week from the end of the tournament and before the end of the QP. Requests will be considered on an individual basis.

In addition, the following criteria shall apply:

The player must play in the top division.
There must be at least 12 players in the tournament, including all divisions.
The division must be rated by WESPA or a WESPA-recognized Scrabble body.
The SA Ratings Committee, whose consent may be withheld for any reason whatsoever, must agree to admit the tournament.

[2] SA reserves the right to request proof of overseas residence such as a letter from employer stating overseas company address and period of overseas posting.

Selection

Every eligible player will be ranked first by NOP and then by QR, both in descending order, and will be invited in that order.

Ties between players who have the same NOP and QR will be broken by the number of rated games in the QP, with the player who has played more rated games ranked higher.

Selectees must accept their invitation by one month after the end of the QP or 14 Aug 2027, whichever is earlier, failing which their place will be offered to the next eligible player.

Selectees who have declined their invitation as of the deadline may choose to indicate provisional interest to be reinstated. If so, they may be offered a slot again only after all subsequent eligible players have declined their invitations.
